More rainy day stuff...

It's been raining here a bit lately; and of course it HAD to rain on the weekend.  Those two sacred days that we have as a family to do some really cool outside things.  So, we had to change our plans a bit, and find some really awesome inside stuff to do together.  Here are a few that we came up with.

The boys have this monstrous train track that is over 120 pieces to put together.  Needless to say, it sits in their closet, until the next rainy day.  Boy were they excited when they woke up Saturday morning and saw rain!  They took that box out of their closet so fast, and I left my husband to set it up as I ran out the door to complete some errands...on my own.  Somehow, there were a couple of extra pieces, but everything looked great!  And they had so much fun playing with it.  Thank you Dan for setting that up for them!

The rest of Saturday was filled with Dan and Pierce having some man time, and then helping Nana fix her computer.  We also had Nana over for dinner (I love having so much family in the same town), and then one of my amazing friends came over with her two kiddos.  It was great to sit around talking, playing board games, and making popcorn in the air popper for the kids to eat while they all huddled together watching Ice Age.  Maybe that is my old school self, but it is so nice to not see kiddos attached to video games, and being able to enjoy each others company.

Sunday morning was...more rain.  This time, it was a downpour.  With all of us staying up until about midnight, I needed something quick and easy to do, that would also be low key.  I happen to have silicone cupcake holders, and a package of Halloween erasers I purchased at the Dollar Tree the day before.  There also was this flubber/slime/gak, whatever you want to call it project that I have been wanting to do forever. What was the final verdict?

It was a ton of fun for the boys.  I found the recipe here:  http://www.growingajeweledrose.com/2013/09/pumpkin-slime-play-recipe.html, and while I tried to follow it to the dot, I did not put in enough pumpkin spice for it to smell like pumpkin pie.  However, I was stingy with it because we have so many pumpkin and banana smoothies for snack, I did not want to waste it.  :)  Dan was amazed at how well it cleaned up (it peeled off our hard wood floors.  However it took a lot of scrubbing to come out of clothing).  I was shocked the boys had so much fun making pretend cupcakes.  Then they realized they could step in it and make the air bubbles pop.  I love when
my guys use every part of their body to create something awesome.

Monday morning was....more rain.  We have a river going through our garage right now, but that happens almost every time it rains.  I am trying very hard not to complain about it, since I had mentioned it to my friend this week I need a day of rain so we can all snuggle and watch classic movies.  But, one day would have been nice.  Not 3.  The final point of exasperation was the tornado warning...I thought we lived in CT and not Oklahoma anymore.  So, the boys and I went downstairs to decorate a box and turn it into a barn...since that is our theme this week.  But, they had other ideas.  Pierce decided that he needed to make a sunset across the box, and that we needed lights to make stars.  He used purple, red, and blue crayons to color the sky, and Carter went to town with green on the ground.  It was awesome to see them doing such a big project together, with very little help from me.  Pierce even grabbed his flashlight so he could see what he was drawing in more detail.  I have to admit, it came out pretty awesome.  I want to find a way to organize their room later so that we could bring the box up, and they could use it as a cuddle nook or whatever they wanted.

That was it for our rainy day activities.  I guess it was not the fanciest grouping of activities, but it did foster imagination in the boys.  We also had a lot of CHEAP fun, which for any family with one income is quite important.  We technically started farm week yesterday, but the boys were only slightly into it; they were a bit exhausted from the weekend.  Hope everyone else survived the rain and wind, and get outside today to enjoy this sunshine!
