Despite me sitting down Sunday night and making lesson plans, I have not followed a single one. I kind of feel like I am not accomplishing a whole bunch, but I know that by play and interaction, the kiddos are learning a bunch.
For instance, we marched a parade on Sunday in Bristol. It was called a reverse parade, and one of my other mommy friends had mentioned it to me as an idea for things to do. What I had envisioned in my head of just marching a parade was WRONG. There were things being passed out to us left and right (tooth brushes included), Santa along the route hugging every boy and girl that wanted one (of course my boys did), The Grinch, and a living nativity to just name a few attractions. We also saw one of our other friends, and the boys all had a blast. Carter even walked part of the parade and ran to the dinosaur dressed like Santa. I had to chuckle about that one.
Monday morning, despite Pierce not feeling the best in the world, we walked Thomaston Dam with a couple of our friends in the fog. It looked so cool! And it felt great as the fog burned off. It felt like a weight was lifting off my shoulders, since I have been so stressed about a few things lately. Pierce then requested story time at the library, and how do you say no to that? I just kinda kept him with Carter, and they kept their snotty noses mostly to themselves. The best part is that both of the kids pretty much laughed all day, had smiles on their faces, and we had some good, clean FUN. Well, playing in dirt and throwing rocks may not have been the cleanest, but you get the idea.
It was also awesome to see Carter trying to be a big kid more and more. Now that he has this walking thing down, he and Pierce are becoming even more inseparable They are running down the hall chasing each other, throwing rocks with each other (and not AT each other), talking in their own language to each other, etc. Pierce has shown just how much he has grown both physically and mentally. He grabbed crackers off the counter without the step stool. So of course Carter tried to as well, but could not reach. Pierce's response, "Here Carter. Here are some crackers. Next time, move the step stool over." Don't misunderstand me - they are not angels, and Buddy the elf is helping with his nightly visits back to the North Pole.
Tuesday we took advantage of one of the last really warm days, and headed to Sherwood Island State Park. I guess it stayed foggy and rainy up here, but it was 60 degrees, sunny, and awesome on the beach. Carter discovered he could not only walk but run on sand, chase seagulls with his brother, and that ocean water really is cold in winter. Pierce discovered with his cool yellow boots let him put his feet in the water, without getting wet, and they can help him climb up the jetty. We had such a great time, and ended up spending 4 hours at the beach. Neither child wanted to go home, but I did not want to drive in rush hour I-95 traffic, so we did end up leaving a bit early.
However, on the way home, Carter fell asleep, and I thought Pierce had too since he was so quiet. I decided to play a little Limp Bizkit (Yes, I am aware way old school), and sing along to it. All of a sudden I hear a little voice in the backseat singing, "I'm gonna do things my way, yes my way, my way or the highway." GREAT. Then he requested I play the song over again. What else did he sing on the way home? How about a little Dirty Dancing soundtrack. That means that he is listening to way more of my music than I thought. And I have no intentions of changing it. It is important that they see their mommy is her own person as well.
We were supposed to go to a gingerbread village last night, but Pierce specifically looked at me and said, "Can we paint instead? I don't want to go in the car." So we stayed home. They both appreciated it, and it was probably a better thing with them not feeling so hot...or rather too hot.
Today we have spent the morning at Rockwell Park, the bank, the post office, and downtown. This was Carter's first time going to Rockwell Park as a confident walker, and he took a walk all through the park and LOVED every minute of it. He tried to feed the ducks and geese some empty peanut shells, and Pierce was showing him the ropes about the paracourse. I realized they are growing way quicker than I ever expected. I already wish I could get some time back, but that is impossible. Instead, it is time to look forward to an amazing future with two amazing men. :)
